A duplicate is cut by tracing the original, so every copy inherits the original's wear and adds a little of its own. Copies made from copies drift far enough that they eventually stop turning. Some keys cannot be duplicated over the counter at all: restricted and patented keyways are protected by a key-control agreement, and a transponder or proximity key needs programming to the vehicle, not just cutting.

Why does my new copy not work properly?

My key says 'do not duplicate'. Does that stop copies?
That stamp carries no legal force on an ordinary key. Genuine key control comes from a restricted or patented keyway, where blanks are controlled and copies require documented authorisation.
