Two locksmith estimates can be difficult to compare because they describe different work. Put both against the same door, symptom and required outcome before comparing totals. A repair assessment and a confirmed replacement proposal are not equivalent stages.
Identify scope differences
Clarify call-out terms, labour, parts and taxes. Ask whether hardware is identified and assessed as suitable or remains provisional. Note exclusions, including door or frame work that may be outside the proposed lock service.
Ask how findings on site will change the scope and how you approve additional work. A quoted allowance should remain visibly provisional rather than being treated as a guarantee.
Compare the handover
Check which functions will be tested and what documentation is supplied. Relevant product and workmanship terms should be obtained from the provider rather than assumed from another job.
Keep the accepted scope and changes together. This makes a price comparison traceable to the actual work you authorized.
